Bucktail is a specific term for the tail fur of a deer. It is distinguished by an unusually hard and long awn and a weakly defined hard undercoat. In the manufacture of flies, the guard component is mainly used. Bucktail is a popular material most used for making streamers - there is a whole generation of these baits, so called “Bucktail Streamers”. It is also used to make some modern salmon flies. The guard hairs of this fur are excellent for imitating the tail filaments of the winged forms of mayflies and mayfly nymphs, as well as antennae. When tying realistic flies using bucktail, legs are often formed. The spine of the bucktail is one of the toughest, has no tendency to curl, does not differ in spirality, is straight, with a distinct conical shape. Bucktails are available in natural colors and in a variety of natural and attractive colors.
