Fly fishing rods

Since fly fishing is not similar to standard fishing, you need to pay attention to the purchase of a good fly fishing rod. And in order to thoroughly understand the choice of rod, you need to clearly imagine its basic functions. A samme:

    Controlled high-precision bait casting. With a good fly rod and with some skills, you can put the line on the water so as not to scare the fish;
    Cord control on water. This feature is by definition not available when fishing with traditional spinning;
    Weighing fish is probably the main and most important function of this type of tackle.

Now let's move on to a detailed consideration of the choice of fly fishing rod.

There are many classifications of these tackles. Fishing rods are conventionally divided into two major groups: one-handed and two-handed models.

Two-handed options are large in size and power. They are used to catch the largest fish. The handle of this tackle is divided into two parts by a reel holder.

The choice of fly fishing rod depending on the material of manufacture:

    Wood. Models made of natural wood have high power. However, they are currently completely out of production;
    Bamboo. Bamboo rods have high elasticity and accuracy of casting. Feature of fly fishing bamboo rods is their impregnation by special means;
    Fiberglass. Differs in the lowest cost, but concede to analogs on all significant characteristics;
    Carbon fiber (carbon). Modern, expensive material with the best characteristics.

Depending on the system, fly rods are conventionally divided into the following categories:

    Slow mode;
    Medium;
    Fast mode;
    Very fast mode (Extra Fast).

Slow and medium rods are called "English" and fast and very fast rods are "American".

The main area of use of rods with a slow system - small rivers and streams. That is, conditions in which long throwing is not required and there is no gusty wind. Traditionally, the length of such rods is 2.4 - 2.7 meters. This rod is most effective when fishing for dry flies, providing a delicate cast, which is very important when fishing in stagnant water or on a slow current.

Fast and very fast rods are effective on ponds with a large water mirror. The high speed of the cord when casting allows you to overcome strong winds, and the hard tip allows you to control the cord on a strong current. Such fly fishing rods are used for long throws and for catching with a shooting head. Especially all the benefits of such rods are felt when fishing for a wet fly or nymph.

Middle class rods are kind of universal. They are equally convenient when fishing for nymphs, and when fishing for dry flies. The advantage is also good depreciation quality. It is especially convenient to fish with rods of an average system in the conditions of a small wind and on a average current.

Choice of fly rod depending on the power class

    Classes 0-3 are recommended for catching small fish on a dry fly;
    Class 4 is convenient for fishing in low wind conditions on narrow rivers up to 20 meters wide;
    Class 5-6 is used for fishing weighing up to 2.5 kilograms;
    Class 7 is effective for working with heavy nymphs and streamers. It is used for catching predatory fish of various breeds, including aspen and pike weighing up to 5 kilograms;
    Class 8 - 9 is used for fishing in strong winds, on large baits. With such a rod you can compete with fish weighing up to 8 kilograms;
    Class 10 and above is generally used only by sea fisherman to catch large fish.

No less important selection criterion is the length of the rod. The choice of model depending on the length is determined by the future specifics of fishing. For example, for fishing on wide rivers and lakes, it is advisable to use a rod length of 3 meters. Fishing rods about 2.5 meters long are suitable for fishing on small rivers.
