Rooster scalps are one of the essential materials for the fly tyer. The scalp is a complete set of feathers from the head and neck of a rooster, located on a specially treated skin (scalp) taken from a bird. Rooster feathers are harder and more elastic than chicken feathers, it is from them that the stiff "brushes" of the legs of dry flies ("dry flies") and parachutes ("parachute fly") are knitted. The tails of dry flies are also knitted from a bunch of feather beards taken from a rooster scalp, while it is desirable to use feathers located along the edges of the scalp, since these feathers have long straight beards. The highest quality feathers are located on the thinnest part of the scalp, between the crest, eyes and eyelids of the bird. The presence of a whole scalp allows you to pick up paired whole feathers (or their fragments) when necessary; for example, when knitting wings from the tops of feathers or large streamers.
